Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Preview: Cheltenham and more on BBC 4, tonite (Sunday 8)

What's got into the BBC? Jazz on Friday, jazz this evening. Let's not look a gift horse and all that! Beginning at eight o'clock Jazz All Stars: Cheltenham at 25 is a recording of last week's gala concert featuring a host of big names including Gregory Porter, Paloma Faith, Joe Stilgoe, Giacomo Smith and Géorgia Cecile (pictured). Cheltenham at 25 marks the quarter century of the Gloucestershire event. What better way to celebrate than to invite the big names and engage the services of the Guy Barker Big Band and the BBC Concert Orchestra? The whole shebang is presented by YolanDa Brown.

Following Cheltenham, the 'more' comes in the shape of Jazz UK: Spitting Fire (9:45pm). DJ and broadcaster Tina Edwards surveys the 'underground music scene'. Those 'on the scene' include Matthew HalsallIshmael Ensemble and Sons of Kemet. To round off the Beeb's evening of jazz at 10:45pm it's Oliver Murray's 2020 documentary Ronnie's: Ronnie Scott and His Famous Jazz Club. Russell

And I wholeheartedly recommend The Grateful Dead Movie at 9pm on Sky Arts. Jazz fans will be comfortable with the amount and quality of improvisation going on.
