Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Adrian Cox celebrating the Sunday Service's second anniversary - April 10

Adrian Cox (clarinet, vocals); Graham Cox (banjo, vocals)

The pandemic imposed lock down once, no twice, at least twice. One of the few good things to emerge during these strange times has been Adrian Cox's Sunday Service. Today, clarinet maestro Cox was celebrating the second anniversary of his weekly online sermon. Most Sundays for two years Cox has streamed from somewhere in the world - Britain, Europe, Central America, South America. Today's milestone gig featured Cox solo (clarinet and vocals) for three quarters of an hour, later to be joined by birthday boy Mr Cox Snr, Graham Cox, banjo.

From In the Sweet By and By to There's Yes! Yes! in Your Eyes Cox Jnr held the fort on his own, singing one or two numbers along the way. Birthday boy Cox Snr joined his globe-trotting son (A. Cox will soon be on his way to South America for a month-long series of gigs) to strum a banjo and sing Keepin' out of Mischief Now and a timely April Showers. No Sunday Service next week (Cox will be gigging at Peggy's Skylight in Nottingham with Joe Webb), the next session will be on Sunday 24 (one o'clock sharp). Russell
