This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Classic Swing @ Venue, Cramlington - Jan 19

A new weekly residency in south east Northumberland! Classic Swing, Wednesdays, 1:00pm at Venue. Yes, 'Venue' is the name of the venue! Located in Manor Walks Shopping Centre, the proprietor has gone for a seventies' retro look - mirrors, smoked glass, flowers (plastic) and...a piano!  The band set up on the upper level of the split level room, audience and/or diners seated on the lower level, it would be the usual format of two sets with a finish by three o'clock. 

One or two familiar faces made the short trip from Cullercoats to show support, the band kicking off with Indiana. In the absence of a trombone player, Messrs Tommy Moran and Jim McBriarty shared the solos between them with pianist Jeremy McMurray rightly grabbing his quota. It would be a sin (there's a song in there somewhere) not to make full use of the half decent instrument. Honeysuckle Rose heard McBriarty singing, McMurray soloing to some applause from those diners with an ear cocked to the jazz. Leading up to the interval band vocalist Olive Rudd sang a couple of numbers - What a Difference a Day Makes and My Melancholy Baby.

Second set, more from Olive Rudd: 'S Wonderful followed by Tin Roof Blues, the latter a most effective vocal with languorous contributions from McBriarty, clarinet, and laid-back Pres-style tenor by Moran. To close out this first gig in sunny south east Northumberland Olive Rudd went from a downbeat Summertime to an upbeat When You're Smiling. More next week (Wednesday, one o'clock). Russell
