The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Rico's Popup Louis: 'Live in the Kitchen' - June 25

(Screenshot by Russell)
Rico Tomasso (trumpet, flugelhorn, vocals); Nils Solberg (guitar, vocals)

Lately, Rico Tomasso has taken to streaming from his kitchen, inviting musicians to call round to play a few tunes. Last week pianist Will Barry was in the house, this evening our host was joined by guitarist Nils Solberg. A welcoming beer in hand, it was Solberg who took a first vocal on the Burton Lane-Frank Loesser number sung by Billie Holiday, Says My Heart. Another late thirties' number recorded by Billie Holiday, Me, Myself and I, appealed to Rico, so, he sang it.

We were up and running, shared vocals, Rico on trumpet and flugelhorn, Nils, guitar. Darn That Dream given a Latin treatment worked (Rico on flugel), Three Little Words (Bing sang it way back with the Rhythm Boys), As Time Goes By, this evening's set list included some rarely played tunes, a welcome move at that, considering many set lists can be somewhat predictable. More next Friday at seven o'clock. Russell
