This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Charlotte Keeffe Quartet @ The Globe – June 13

What a joy! my first live gig since Covid began almost 18 months ago.  Back at the splendidly upgraded Globe for this co-promotion by the Jazz Co-op and Jazz North East giving us a night of top quality improvised jazz performed by the splendid Charlotte Keeffe Quartet. As many things are at this time of the year the night was a game of two sets. The first half was a single improvisation subsequently named Right Here, Right Now the title of Keeffe’s recently released debut album. For me completely improvised music only really works when listened to in situ so I have really missed live performances during these lockdown times. Being able to see the interaction of the individual players visually as well as audibly is part and parcel of the whole experience. The set certainly didn’t disappoint and I was as happy as a Brentford supporter at a play-off final enjoying the creativity of the four musicians on stage.

By contrast, the second set was more controlled with the band playing a series of Keeffe’s  compositions. The first 3 pieces 1200 Photographs, A Horse Named Galaxy and Cotton Tail are all from the aforementioned album. Although there was still lots of improvisation to keep us free jazzers happy there was also plenty of rather lovely mellow and melodious sections too which for those who may have been put off by the first half would definitely have appreciated too.  The subtlety of Handysides on drums and Long on double bass really came to the fore. Freed on guitar played several absolutely delightful solos. Band leader Keeffe meanwhile always kept it exciting on trumpet. The final piece Sweet Corn brought the evening to a wonderful close. It felt good to be ‘back in the game’. Steve H
