Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

KSTV: 'Bird' on 52nd Street & John Kirby - June 19

(Screenshot by Ken Drew)
Giacomo Smith (alto sax, clarinet); Alec Harper (alto sax); Pete Horsfall (trumpet); Joe Webb (piano); Ferg Ireland (double bass); Shane Forbes (drums) + Nathaniel Facey (alto sax); Ella Hohnen-Ford (vocals)

An eagerly anticipated set, Giacomo Smith leading a hand-picked small group playing classic 52nd Street charts by way of John Kirby. What's more, judging the vociferous reaction to the music heard this evening, a good number of Kansas Smitty's patrons were in the building. From the Famous Door to Jimmy Ryan's.

Introducing Anitra's Dance, Smith said: This is hard [to play]. Difficult, perhaps, but the band played it with aplomb. It wasn't long before Ms Ella Hohnen-Ford joined to sing a couple of numbers - The Folks Who Live on the Hill and If I Had a Ribbon Bow. Excellent! Also in the house, Mr Nathaniel Facey. He too joined the ensemble to play killer alto on Groovin' High, trumpeter Pete Horsfall nailing Dizzy's coda. Talking of Dizzy...Salt Peanuts. Oh, yes! Facey stayed on for this one - what a player! - backed by a cookin' outfit (Shane Forbes' ride cymbal a thing of beauty). To close, Royal Garden Blues. All on the stand blazed a trail - Horsfall, Alec Harper's searing alto, tremendous.
