This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Preview: Tonight, Prohibition Bar Gig of the Year, again!

If you missed a leading contender for Gig of the Year in March at Newcastle's Prohibition Bar then tonight (Monday) presents a chance to redeem yourself with a most welcome, quick return by Edinburgh's Tenement Jazz Band. From N'Awlins to Chicago and back again these guys are the business. Stunning ensemble work a la New Orleans' Shake 'Em Up Jazz Band, the Tenements will be playing for dancers and listeners alike. 

Bogalusa Strut, Cushion Foot Stomp and Big Chief Battle Axe (all from the band's debut recording New Orleans Wiggle) alongside some newer material will ensure Tyneside's swing dance fraternity take to the floor from the get-go. The Tenements' appearance earlier this year on Pink Lane was truly a sensation and tonight - Monday - promises to live up to expectations. Doors open at 8:30, admission is ridiculously cheap - that's FREE! - and no one will leave thinking they haven't had their money's worth. The gig is actually a 'jar on the bar' arrangement, that is you pay what you feel the band is worth. Forget loose change, you'll happily part with a fiver or tenner as you shower the guys with praise. Oh, yeah...make sure you've got a spare fiver with you as you'll want to buy a copy of the CD! Gig of the Year? Come on down and judge for yourself.
