Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: Patchwork Jazz Orchestra - The Adventures of Mr Pottercakes

(Review by Lance)

There are big band albums and there are BIG BAND ALBUMS! this one comes into the latter category although don't expect to find Glenn Miller emerging from the English Channel covered in seaweed! No, this is very much a large ensemble meeting the standard of today's contemporary players. However, don't get me wrong, this is no pet shop fire group and yet, nor is it a swing band. It's a band that swings to today's rhythm, the pulse of life whether it be to the office or the job centre is totally encapsulated.

Kenton, Gil Evans, Wheeler and others showed the way and these boys have found it and, maybe even widened and extended the road.

So many superb soloists that I hesitate to single them out in case I overlook someone. Nevertheless, here I go: James Copus' flugel on Barcarolle; Rob Luft throughout, his guitar playing a delight; Tom Green on trombone; the saxes - ah forget it! I don't want to analyse it, I just want to enjoy listening to it which is what I'm doing as I type. If you like the big band music of today, yesterday and tomorrow then Mr Pottercakes covers all the bases and more.
De-lightful!

And they're on tour! Watford (24/2); Cambridge (26/2); Sheffield (27/2); Leeds (28/20; London (album launch 1/3); Oxford (20/3).
Alas, once again the parade has passed us by
Lance.
Spark 007.
James Davison, Adam Chatterton, James Copus, Tom Dennis (trumpets/flugel); Kieran McLeod, Tom Green, Jamie Pamenta (trombone); Yusuf Narçin (bass trom); Matthew Herd, Sam Glaser, Alex Hitchcock, Sam Miles, Tom Smith (reeds); Liam Dunachie (piano/B3); Rob Luft (guitar); Misha Mullov-Abbado (bass); Scott Chapman (drums).
