Early Bird Band @ Lit & Phil - Jan. 19

Paul Edis (MD, piano, clarinet, alto sax); Lucien Guest (trumpet); Haaruun Miller (soprano sax); Tom Henery (guitar); Alex Shipsey (bass guitar); Dylan Thompson (drums)
(Review by Russell)

They'd been workshopping for a couple of hours prior to the doors opening to the public. MD Paul Edis put the Early Birders through their paces as they looked at four new tunes. Today's quintet opened with Our Love is Here to Stay. Guitarist Tom Henerey stepped forward, as did pocket dynamo trumpeter Lucien Guest with a round of fours thrown in to see if Dylan Thompson was awake this Saturday morning...he was.

The Shadow of Your Smile as a bossa heard from Haaruun Miller (there would be more from the young man later) and Henerey once more with Dr. Edis switching from flute to piano. Rodgers and Hart's My Romance featured the horns once again and then onto the final number of the half-hour set. Haaruun Miller, playing soprano sax, found himself in the onerous role of John Coltrane famously examining My Favorite Things. Dr. Edis smiled, your scribe wondered if Haaruun was familiar with Trane's take. As the quintet - Guest, Miller, Henery and the ace rhythm section - Alex Shipsey, bass, and Dylan Thompson, drums - readied itself, MD Edis returned to the Lit & Phil's  Kawai to play McCoy Tyner's intro. Our soprano sax man hung in there, after all, Trane himself had to start somewhere!
