Jonathan Silk’s Fragment Quartet @ The Jazz Cafe

Jonathan Silk (drums); Adam Jackson (alto sax); Tom Ford (guitar); Chris Mapp (bass & electronics)

Jonathan Silk last visited Tyneside with a 17 piece big band on Tuesday night he returned to the Jazz Cafe but this time with a much smaller unit. As the bandleader said this ‘certainly makes meal times easier’. Most of the compositions were from the big band's album Fragment but the quartet format gives them are very different feel.
With both bass player Chris Mapp and guitarist Tom Ford making use of a vast range of electronic paraphernalia, there was an almost dare I say it Prog rock feel to some of the music. The highlight of the evening for me was Buchaille a Scottish mountain climbed by Silk as a child. This piece seemed to contain many nuanced passages which I enjoyed immensely. For me, all the tunes seem to reach another level when Adam Jackson on alto took a solo he is defiantly one to watch. On drums composer and bandleader Jonathan Silk really kept things rolling creating a great groove for the band to improvise around. A very enjoyable gig indeed.
