Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: Aki Rissanen Trio - Amorandom

Aki Rissanen (pno); Antti Löjönen (bs); Teppo Mäkynen (dms).
(Review by Lance).
We don't get very many jazz discs for review from Finland although this one actually came via London and Edition Records. So, in these cash-strapped times, when the team at Edition give it the thumbs up it's obviously got something.

Downbeat described Rissanen as  a Rising star around Europe. Dave Liebman said, "He [Aki] is one of the best young pianists I have heard in years." The Guardian [John Fordham?] kicked in with "A melodic imagination and instinct to blend the familiar into unfamiliar shapes." So accurately put that it makes me realise why he is working in the lofty heights of The Guardian and I'm going down the mean streets and shadowy alleys of BSH!
But yes, that does some it up so well. thank you John.
Contemporary piano, for sure, but not beyond comprehension - how could it be? it was composed for an animated film realised by, I quote, the grand old man of the Finnish animation scene, Antti Peränne.
I want to see that film!
Listen to Bird Vision.
Lance.
Available now on Edition Records.
