Some review copies land on the doormat and are opened with trepidation. A feeling frequently confirmed upon hearing the opening track. Trepidation then gives way to procrastination and I say mañyana which, as we know, never comes in any language.
No such qualms with this one. With Toronto-based MacDonald and multi-award winner of Down Beat polls Tom Harrell in the front line, plus a rhythm section to die for, trepidation slipped from my vocabulary and procrastination only applied to more mundane matters such as eating and fixing the garden fence. Harrell has successfully merged so many aspects of the greats (Hubbard, Morgan, Brown etc) into an amalgam that the end product comes out as pure Harrell. Fluent, lyrical, driving, without histrionics, MacDonald brings to mind the great Blue Note tenormen of the 1950's and 1960's. He blows with a panache that makes me wonder why he hasn't been on my radar until now? Certainly he's won many awards in Canada, led big bands and plays tenor beautifully. He makes every note count.
Neil Swainson, we recall from his work with George Shearing, Brian Dickinson plays fine piano and Mackrel impresses all round but particularly so with the fours at the end of Bop Zone (MacDonald manages to slip in the popular quote How Are Things in Glocca Morra? Shades of Dexter Gordon!
Normally, after playing a review disc it is filed away and frequently forgotten, This won't be forgotten - I'm going to listen to it again, and again, and again.
A breath of fresh air!
