This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. RIP Acker Bilk

George Watt, followed closely by Peter Bevan, have related the sad news to me that trad legend Acker Bilk left us today aged 85.
Loved by many as both a jazzman and an entertainer, Acker was respected by musicians and fans from far beyond the restrictions of his chosen style. Saw him a few years back at Sage Gateshead with Kenny Ball and Chris Barber - well Kenny's gone and Acker's no longer a stranger on these shores ...
Rest In Peace Acker, like another departed great, you did it your way, and it wasn't such a bad way.
Buena Sera I'll raise a glass of scrumpy to you tonight..

PS: George Watt notes, poignantly, that it was on this date, 58 years ago, that he met his wife Dorothy.

Great bloke. When I lived down that way I rarely passed through Pensford without seeing a new poster with hs name on it. RIP.
