This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Preview: Abdullah Ibrahim @ Sage Gateshead

Abdullah Ibrahim has, in the course of 80 years, emerged from his early days in South Africa, where he was known as Dollar Brand - Brand being his birth name - to today where the name of Abdullah Ibrahim is revered in jazz piano circles worldwide.
A few years back he thrilled the audience at the Gateshead International Jazz Festival with a concert by his band Ekaya that, no doubt, remains uppermost in the memory of all those who filled Hall One on that memorable evening.
The blurb makes reference to ...music of a deeply reflective soulfulness, unparalleled in lesser artists. Heart stopping melody and a powerful spirituality...
A good summation of the man from the Townships who forged his own identity to produce a musical originality that combined the cultures of two different continents.
However, this concert differs inasmuch as it is a solo piano recital, no distractions, just the great man himself living up to The Guardian's description as The humble high priest of international jazz.
The concert is on Wednesday November 19 at Sage Gateshead. Tickets are £24.50/£32.50 and the concert in Hall One starts at 7.30pm.
