This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Am Jam @ The Globe. October 12

The Jazz Co-op’s inaugural second Sunday in the month jam session – Am Jam – at the Globe attracted a dozen or so participants and one or two listeners. Building work goes on apace and the upstairs jazz room is a work in progress. The décor, best described as ‘alternative’, is, if nothing else, distinctive (see photo).
The house rhythm section led by Keith (guitar), with bass and drums, worked non-stop, keen to emphasise the inclusive, low level aspect of the session. Dougie (tenor sax) was first to throw his sombrero in the ring (see photo). Ann (vocals) called Autumn Leaves, Julie sang Lullaby of Birdland and debutant Chris conquered nerves to take the mic.
Stuart (tenor sax & keyboards) and Fiona (alto & vocals) made welcome contributions. Andy arrived, left his double bass in the car and took a spell on electric bass. Groovin’ High, Well You Needn’t and Blue Bossa were but three highlights and late on Lindsay (mandolin) turned-up, tuned-up, stepped-up and, cold fingers or not, soloed effectively on Have You Met Miss Jones? The afternoon drew to a close as all jumped aboard The A Train.
The Jazz Co-op is well and truly up and running. A constantly changing stock of beers, ciders, cocktails, a wine list and soft drinks will surely offer something for everyone.
