This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Julian Arguelles Quartet @ The Maltings, Berwick. October 9.

Julian Arguelles (tenor); Kit Downes (piano); Sam Lasserson(bass); James Maddren(Drums)
After a dash back from Antibes in the afternoon, arrived in Berwick in time to hear the above quartet
Mostly original material including his soon to be recorded suite which includes hugger-mugger, jada jada, nitty gritty, iron pyrites.
You've got the idea.
Wonderfully creative music from a tenor-man with a beautiful tone.
One reference to the past was his playing of a piece "Mr. Mac"; which harked back to Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath. Remember the City Hall gig where this music was so cutting edge that the late Joe Young led the walk-out at half time leading all the ex banjo players.

Thank you BB. I remember the McGregor concert well. It did make demands on the listener. However, I seem to think I stayed on as the second set was by the Gary Burton Quartet which was worth the earlier suffering!
