CD Review:The Chris Parker Trio

Kyoko Oyobe (pno); Ameen Saleem (bs); Chris Parker (dms)
Kyoko Oyobe could be the new Marian McPartland - not that there ever could be another Marian Mac but if there was this Japanese lady could be it.
Oyobe has that lovely delicate flow that women jazz pianists are so adept at - I know that is sexist but I hope I'm excused as her playing is just so beautiful. The rhythms and the harmonies are totally absorbing and yet, when the going get's into a heavier groove she discards the kimono, pulls on her jeans and sweatshirt and kicks! The mood varies, the jeans are replaced with the slinky gown and you know she's playing a song about love. Bassist Saleem performs as if he too is in love. It's one of those discs where love is the dominating factor. Wednesday Morning is so romantic, one wonders about Tuesday night!
Song For Bilbao is a  funk thing that kicks romance out of the door for at least one track! It's dancy. let's boogie for a while, a  track that has Oyobe doing just that..
Six Beauties on a Rooftoph is a swinger although I don't understand the  h on the end - the next track also has this strange acquisition - Parker gives it 6-0!  The drummer claims the territorial rights to Impromptoph although he admits that Schubert had a hand in the melody.
Parker, the Instigator of these shenanigans, drives the trio along. It's one of those discs that cry out to be played in the motor without  risk of collision. A drive in the country with your best gal/pal/boy and you know that even if the date doesn't work out - at least you had the music which you can enjoy again and again with or without company.
Final track - Rockhouse - move over Ray Charles!
The Chris Parker Trio CD was released in September on GPR Records.
Lance.
