This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review: New York Voices - Let It Snow.

If you're dining at home this Christmas, before you order the duck or the goose have a gander at this CD - it certainly ain't no turkey!
The New York Voices, in my opinion, currently the best vocal ensemble around, have produced a Christmas album that invites comparison with any vocal album of recent years and I don't just mean Yuletide offerings.

The opening Let It Snow has a Herman First Herd intro that sets up the songsters to display their rich, harmonic, tapestry - it also includes a cracking tenor solo by Meader who pops up elsewhere on soprano. Oh yes and he also arranges most of the numbers! . Think Man Tran, Hi-Lo's, Freshmen, Swingles and you soon realise that NYV are in that league - some might say they are heading it. This is perfect festival period music. It contains carols but, without a hint of sacrilege, they swing like as if the choir had OD'd on incense and communion wine!
Apart from the carols and Snow there's Christmas Song, Holiday for Strings and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Your guests will also appreciate the lack of White Christmas, Little Donkey, Winter Wonderland and Rudolph - if they want them they can nip down to their nearest supermarket!
And, unlike many Christmas presents,  it won't be forgotten after Boxing Day! I'll still be playing this at Easter! 
The CD New York Voices - Let It Snow is due for release on October 29 on the Five Cent Label.
