This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Yellow Jackets/Ronnie Scott All-Stars @ Ronnie Scott's March 19, 2013.

The Yellow Jackets have been going for around 30 years, albeit with fluctuations of personnel. This version was, I guess, as good as any. Certainly the capacity crowd at Ronnie Scott's thought so.
It is jazz/rock fusion - remember that genre? - and it brought back the sounds of the 1980's only somewhat updated.
All four are superb musicians with Franceschino proving an able replacement for Bob Mintzer. Blistering, virulent, paint-stripping tenor solos are his forté. Split note harmonics up in the stratosphere contrasted with soft moments of tenderness. Soprano sax sounded good too. You can't beat the old Mark VIs. Back in New York he leads a band called "Them" - I'd like to hear them.
On six string bass guitar Pastorius gives truth to the saying 'Like father like son' - I'm sure Jaco would be proud of him.
Russell Ferrante was effective on piano and keyboard whilst Kennedy led from the rear and gave a display of powerhouse drumming in his imaginative solos.
Two excellent back to back sets that even the occasional ideciveness didn't mar.
In support,, the Ronnie Scott All-Stars - Pete Long (clt); James Pearson (pno); Sam Burgess (bs); Chris Higginbottom (dms) - played extended versions of One O'Clock Jump, Lullaby of the Leaves, and Stone Fox Chase.
Long was in fine form with multii-chorus post Goodman solos whilst Pearson indicated just why he has been house pianist/md for so long. Bass and drums combined to make this set more than just mere support.
