This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Paul Edis Trio @ The Lit and Phil

The second in the series of monthly lunchtime gigs at the Lit and Phil attracted a standing room only audience. The north east’s premier piano jazz trio presented a programme of nine jazz standards composed by four of the stellar names in the history of the music.
Thelonious Monk featured - Monk’s Dream opened the concert and Well,You Needn’t and Rhythm-a-ning closed the performance. In between, the Bill Evans’ pad contributed three beautiful tunes - Very Early, B Minor Waltz (for Elaine) and Laurie whilst Dave Brubeck chipped in with two tunes (Kathy’s Waltz and Unsquare Dance) and Ellington In a Mellotone. Pianist Paul Edis excelled at the Lit & Phil’s Kawai, secure in the knowledge that Mick Shoulder (double bass) and Adam Sinclair (drums) would deliver immaculate support. The mix of ballads and classic bop material made for an enjoyable hour or so in the welcoming confines of one of Newcastle’s hidden gems.
Edis has drawn-up the programme of monthly gigs and the library has offered the use of venue and piano. The early signs are good. The first two concerts could not have gone better (Zoe Gilby gave a great performance last month) and it is clear the jazz public like the arrangement. One thing is for sure – if they turn up next month (Friday 12 April) they will love Saxophonics. 1:00 pm start. Three quid admission. A bargain I’d say.
