Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Jazzwise

The Mark Allen Group, an independent publishing group which publishes more than 50 magazines in business, healthcare, education and leisure, has acquired Jazzwise, the UK's leading jazz magazine.
As the UK's best selling jazz monthly with a panoramic and immersive view of the whole
jazz scene, Jazzwise has gained an impeccable reputation for the quality of its content and
breadth of its jazz appeal. The magazine continues to be edited by award-‐winning editor
and publisher, Jon Newey, with Jazzwise winning the coveted Best Jazz Media accolade at
the prestigious Jazz FM awards in January 2013.
Group Chairman Mark Allen said: "I am delighted that we have managed to acquire such an
excellent and leading title. It has a committed and passionate team and certainly, we will
look after the title and do everything we can to make it even more successful. The group's
interest in jazz, and my own passion in this area, led to the launch of the annual Wiltshire
Jazz Festival seven years ago, a charity event organised in the location of its Wiltshire offices,
which this year takes place on 15th June 2013."Editor and publisher Jon Newey said:
“We are greatly looking forward to taking Jazzwise up to the next level as Europe's
leading English language jazz magazine across print, online and app with the expertise
and support of the Mark Allen Group."
Charles Alexander, founder and former owner of Jazzwise said: “In planning succession
for Jazzwise it was important for me as its founder to find a new owner with an outstanding
track record in magazine publishing and a genuine appreciation of jazz music. In Mark Allen
himself and his company, the Mark Allen Group, I believe that I have more than fulfilled
these criteria. I have every confidence that Mark and his talented team, in conjunction with
Editor/Publisher Jon Newey, will grow the title and take it to new heights. Meanwhile its
former parent company, Jazzwise Publications Limited, will be renamed Jazzsense
Publications Limited and continue to publish and distribute jazz sheet music, tuition books
and software for musicians.
The magazine will be based in the Mark Allen Group's head office in South London.
