This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Gateshead International Jazz Festival 2013 Preview

The ninth Gateshead International Jazz Festival opens in style with a rare north of England performance by the renowned National Youth Jazz Orchestra. Some of the finest young musicians in the land will take to the stage in Hall One at the Sage under the direction of Mark Armstrong to play a host of familiar big band charts and some specially commissioned new arrangements. The band’s pedigree is such that established performers welcome an invitation to appear as a special guest. The Sage audience can expect to hear the impeccable Jacqui Dankworth, the world class trombonist Mark Nightingale and the brilliant saxophonist Jason Yarde. Ticket holders should take their seats on time as the north east’s pride and joy  - Jambone  - will play an opening set. The Sage Gateshead’s education work has produced many success stories and Jambone is one of them. The region’s premier youth jazz ensemble has worked with a number of top-class jazz musicians over the years and 2013 sees adopted Geordie Tim Garland, a resident of Whitley Bay, working with the band to further develop their talents.
