This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) CD Review - Joe Stilgoe: We Look To The Stars.

I missed Joe Stilgoe's first album so the first thing I'm going to do after listening to We Look To The Stars again is to track it down. If it's half as good as this latest album then it is very good indeed!
Singing and playing piano in front of a swinging big band Stilgoe hits the spot from the opening bars of  Let's Begin to the final track - The Kink's Waterloo Sunset - the only non original.
There are a lot of influences Bublé, Cullum, Bobby Darin as well as more contemporary figures...
As Joe himself says, "this new record is much more punchy, reflecting my early taste for Jerry Lee Lewis and Fats Waller, through to Billy Joel, Elton John, Brian Wilson and Stevie Wonder, with a little bit of Nat Cole and Sinatra thrown in for good measure. At the same time I’ve had the chance to listen to some amazing music, people like Elbow, Bon Iver, Laura Marling and Adele, which all seeped in to the process somehow. I've been writing a ton of songs, and though not kicking jazz away, I'm using that great feel from jazz and swing records and hopefully updating my sound.”
Impressive.
Joe Stilgoe: We Look To The Stars is released on Monday July 2.
