This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Sweet and Hot on June 4.

John Carstairs Hallam's Sweet and Hot Orchestra are "coming out of the woodwork" for the Queen's Jubilee. The Orchestra was founded in 1993 to play Vintage Big Band Jazz and Dance Music from the late 20's to the early 40's. The band's library is extensive, with about 400 numbers in "the book" and another 5000+ in the garage! 
In recent years the full-size band has given place to a smaller unit, due to the cost of up to 14 musicians. However, nothing less than a Big Band would do for the Queen's Jubilee.
A 12-piece band (reeds: Alan Marshall, Gavin Lee, Jim McBriarty, Sue Ferris; brass: Mick Hill, Alan Smith, Neville Hartley, Don Fairley; pno: Brian Chester; gtr : Roly Veitch; bass : John Carstairs Hallam; dms: Ian Forbes) plus vocalist Ruth Lambert will be playing at the re-opening of the restored Tynemouth Station on Monday June 4.

The event, which is free and starts at 11 a.m, is organised by North Tyneside Council to celebrate the event..
The Sweet and Hot Orchestra are scheduled to play between 12.45 and 1.45 p.m. Our programme will be selected from popular favourites for both listeners and dancers . We hope to include St. Louis Blues March,  It Don't Mean a Thing etc., Copper Coloured Gal, Hep! Hep! The Jumpin' Jive, (rare numbers from Cab Calloway), A String of Pearls, South of the Border (the hit of the month when WW2 broke out) and even The Palais Glide, plus vocals featuring the talents of jazz vocalist Ruth Lambert.
