Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Jools Holland @ The City Hall, Newcastle.

Lance said:"Might not be all jazz but it will get the adrenalin circulating..."
How right he was! The concert was FANTASTIC! It wasn't all jazz: we had reggae, ska, 80's pop, Muddy Waters / John Lee Hooker blues and, of course, lots of boogie-woogie all done at a break-neck pace and at dizzying volume (with lots of amplification a 20 piece orchestra really lifts the roof)!
Not counting Jools himself, who sang more than he does on TV, there were 5 vocalists including Alison Moyet (wow! - what a blast from the past) and the amazing Ruby Turner. Everyone got to solo - some very fine musicians there - and I still find his piano technique amazing, if not exhausting to watch (a close-up on the keyboard being projected on a giant screen at the back of the stage).
The audience spent much of the evening standing, clapping, cheering and even (quite un-British, really!) dancing in the aisles. I would love to think I'll be doing the same at the SoL tomorrow, but it would need Steve Bruce to have his mojo working and Bent and Welbeck to boom, boom, boom, boom!
