“Manhattan comes to North Shields – and Gosforth”

TONIGHT (Friday Mar 12) & TOMORROW (Mar 13)
“A sparkling mainstay of Manhattan life” – that’s how the New York Times describes Daryl Sherman, one of America’s top female jazz vocalists; she has just completed a fourteen year residency in the famed Oak Room at the Waldorf Astoria, where she not only sang but also played Cole Porter’s own Steinway Grand (she’s an accomplished pianist to boot, having earned her jazz spurs playing with big names such as Milt Hinton, Dick Sudhalter and Bobby Hackett). Well, the Waldorf’s loss is our gain, and we are very proud to present Daryl at The Saville Exchange, North Shields and the Trinity Church & Centre, Gosforth.
Daryl specialises in the ‘Great American Songbook’ of classic, sophisticated, high quality tunes by the great composers (Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, the Gershwins, Rogers & Hammerstein, Harold Arlen and so on): we are delighted that she will be more than ably supported by top U.K. trumpeter/broadcaster/author Digby Fairweather (he has just won the UK Jazz Awards trumpet poll – again!) and his all-star trio, drawn from London’s finest session musicians. Direct from New York (she flies in on Friday morning!) this is the kind of show you would normally expect to see for £20 + at The Sage Gateshead,: her next appearance of this UK tour is at the Glasgow City Hall. Let's hope we have an audience turnout worthy of the high standard of music on offer!
Saville Exchange, Howard Street, North Shields: Friday 12th March at 8pm. Tickets £11 (concessions £10, students £5) from 0191 6437093, or pay on the door
Trinity Church & Centre, Gosforth High Street: Saturday 13th March at 8pm Tickets £15 from 0191 2856130 or pay on the door, but advance booking recommended.
Mike Durham.
