This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. George Webb dies age 91.

Although not a name to be seen very often on LP covers and even less on CD, most British Jazz people know the name of George Webb. His position as leader and pianist of possibly Britain's first ever traditional jazz band, the George Webb Dixielanders, ensured his name would be embedded forever in the annuls of jazz foklore. That Humphrey Lyttleton served an apprenticeship in the ranks of the Dixielanders did George Webb no harm at all. In truth I never heard him only of him. I don't recall George Webb playing in Newcastle but it is feasible that he would at one stage. Interesting to know if any of our traddier site visitors can confirm this. He died on Thursday March 11 aged 91. RIP. Obituary. Lance.
