Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Jazz Esquires at The Porthole 6/1/2010.

Laurie Brown vibes, Miles Watson trumpet/vcl. Bob Stephenson drums, Stan Nicholson bass guitar, Robin Douthwaite guitar and Roy Gibson keyboard.
IN THE BLEAK MIDWINTER, like the Windmill of old, The Porthole never closes. At 1pm the band outnumbered the audience but they gradually arrived by taxi, ferry and on foot to make it not far short of the normal crowd.
Kicking off with "I'm Beginning To See The Light" the band got through a nice mainstream menu ending up with "Lester Leaps In" (minus Lester also minus Dave the Rave who was snowbound. It must have been Pelting down at Pelton).
The high spot for the trumpet section was "Swinging Scorpio", a lovely Buck Clayton number.
As usual the rhythm section was rock solid and swinging like the clappers, the trumpet had a few James & Baker moments, unfortunately it was Jimmy James & Hylda Baker not Harry & Kenny. Roy kept on the keyboard at half time, Brian Lineham did some good numbers on harmonica and Mine Host Mike Read gave out with a couple of Bobby Darin numbers. Derek Chapman the interval drummer was marooned in Consett and Teresa couldn't make it but it's nice for them to see their name in print.
Next week the renowned Mick Hill on trumpet.
Miles (not Davis).
