This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Thanks for The Memory

A section of memorabilia - Posters, Programmes, etc. has been expanded with material from Miles W, Colin A and myself added to items already supplied by Roly and Roy W.
It's fascinating stuff ranging from Dickie Valentine in panto to some mysterious 'Modernists From Blaydon Rhythm Club' (see picture). Perhaps Roly may be able to shed light on this latter group even though he was probably only about 5 at the time!

That 'modernists' at Blaydon is a new one on me but funnily enough, Ernie Graham, who comes to BJC often says jokingly; 'There has always been jazz activity in Blaydon'.
I don't know who they were but there is a good chance it involved my dad's younger brother Ron (Scone), a good jazz/club drummer. Ron was involved with the local jazz scene for many years but also worked part time as a club drummer, organised dances, etc. They had a group The Rhythmaires - Norman Fisher accdn/pno, Arthur Stobbs tnr, Arthur Luke tbn - can't remember the others. Just a small dance/jazz band. There was more pure jazz activity at The Railway Tavern in Blaydon (long demolished). That would be in the 50s. Knowing Ron, I think they would have played mainstream leaning to bop styles. Modern might have meant 'not trad'.
When I was a teenager, Uncle Ron tried to get me interested in jazz and to take some formal drum lessons but I had no interest at the time.
