This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Sax All Night. Courtney Pine at Breakfast Time

I was pleasantly surprised to see Courtney Pine being interviewed on BBC morning television. No longer L'Enfant terrible in the eyes of the purists, Courtney is now one of jazz's more eloquent spokespersons and not just with words but musically too. A snatch of "Easy Living" - unaccompanied soprano - did nothing to harm the cause. A couple of anecdotal stories about Sydney Bechet and the revelation that he, Courtney, takes one of his many saxes to bed with him made for a refreshing cameo amidst the tales of doom and gloom that fill the media.

Also did you see Natalie Cole on BBC breakfast the following day? She's been quite ill but has just released an excellent new CD.

Hi Lance

An ''In Tune'' Courtney Pine(at tea time) was to be heard last Friday on In Tune (BBC Radio 3)at 5.00.p.m..Courtney talked and played for about the first half hour of the programme.The Beeb's listen again facility is available for another three or four days - hear Pine's take on Sidney Bechet.
