Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Joy Askew by Roly

Just been looking at her website - I think it must be the same girl Russell mentioned earlier. I remember her singing "Willow Weep for Me" with Dave & Friends of Jazz - she certainly had charisma.I see in her biog she makes a wee mention of Buddy Rich. Good old Buddy - loved by all who had the good fortune to have any dealings with him.

I remember Joy well, not just for the sax reeds she bought in Windows Music Shop but for her performance at the then University Theatre in a Willy Russell play called "John Paul George Ringo & Bert".
As you may have guessed it was Beatles based and Joy played piano and sang various Beatles numbers. She was accompanied by Geoff Sharkey on guitar and bass guitar and Louis La Rose on drums. This was circa 1976 - I still have the program.
Can anyone else recall this show I wonder. It was, I seem to recollect, an excellent production.

I was the drummer for this part of the tour at the University Theater, Barras Bridge?? I also still have the program. I was playing the part of Ringo and had to sing a couple of songs. It was an 'interesting' gig ans the place was packed out every night.
