It was advertised as the Noel Dennis Quartet but, for some reason or other, Noel couldn't make it so his front line partner in "Splinter", stepped in and it became the Graham Hardy Quartet with Paul Edis (pno), Andy Champion (who else? on bass) and Adrian Tilbrook (dms); in effect the house rhythm section. The opening "Bye Bye Blackbird" showed a slight leaning towards early Miles with Graham playing some dazzling runs and Paul matching him every step of the way. A Clark Terry number, "In Orbit", which had a fine bowed solo by Andy, rounded off a fine first set.For the past eighteen years we've been updating the world about jazz in the north east of England and updating the north east of England about jazz in the world. Hi Lance
Nice to see you once again at NEJC – I want to congratulate you on a very accurate (and speedy) review of last nights gig at the Side café. It’s not very often that a reviewer shows such a knowledge and understanding of the music and the mechanics of putting a performance together. You nailed it all, and I agreed with everything you wrote (even the brushes quip!).
Well done and keep it up.
I am going to put a link to you web site/blog on the front page of the Jazzaction site later today.
Thanks Adrian. a link on the JA website is like getting a mention in the Down Beat Poll.
Incidentally, visitors to the Jazz Action site should dip into Ric Walton's photo site which covers a lot of the gigs I missed at the time.
