This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Johnny Dankworth: the Show Went On


Johnny Dankworth: the Show Went On is being broadcast on Saturday April 10, on More 4 at 8pm. It shows footage from the Stables 40th anniversary concert at which Sir John’s death was announced and also the wonderful celebratory concert which followed his funeral service plus interviews from family and friends.

Tonight at the Bridge.


Tonight at the Bridge Hotel, Newcastle, features Legohead.
The band, pictured left, played there a few weeks back and blew up a storm.
Going to be another great night.
Also, today is ANDY CHAMPION's birthday so Andy, pictured right, will be buying everybody drinks - or is it the other way round?

Help!

A piano playing friend and I are planning some rehearsals soon but cant seem to find any practice space that offers drums AND piano. Found loads with drum kits but no Pianos.
Can anyone help around the Newcastle area?

For Night Owls

A couple of late-nighters tonight.
BUDVIVAR play their brand of Jump Jive Come Bop at the Jazz Café on Newcastle's Pink Lane. 9:30 pm till 1:30 PM.
Meanwhile, down at South Shields' Maltings Pub on Claypath Lane which is more or less opposite the Town Hall, although I don't expect the Mayor to drop by, The COOL BREEZE TRIO play from 10 pm till late. I'd like to know who the guys in CB are. Vocals tonight from Val Dunmore.

Mike Zwerin - the final chapter.

Trombonist/writer Mike Zwerin died today - age 79. I never heard him play trombone but I read many of his articles in Down Beat and his book, Close Enough For Jazz, is close enough to be, in my humble opinion, one of the very best jazz related books.
Strangely enough, I'd picked up the book years ago but never got around to reading it until last Summer! A great read with lots of insight into the day to day life of a jazz musician away from home.

The Latest Goings-on at Ned Kelly's Last Stand - from Colin Aitchison.

Another musician came by from the cruise ship Queen Victoria, a reat tenor player from the UK, called Tim Faulkner...it has been a week of good musicians just passing by, we even had a couple of the horn players from the Tom Jones band, a knock out trombone player sat in with us, but I did not have a camera - pity. Tim Faulkner with the China Coast Jazzmen.
Here is a clip of a jam session with some musicians from the US 7th Fleet Band, great atmosphere, but wild, a lot of the guys were not playing their first instruments, but fun, more like New Orleans than Hong Kong, will send some more stuff over soon. Musicians (?) from the US 7th Fleet band having fun at Ned Kelly's.

Maine Street Jazzmen @ Rosie's (Rosie Malone's, South Shields.)

Olive Rudd (vcl), Herbie Hudson (tmb/hca/vcl), Jim McBriarty (clt), Malcolm Armstrong (pno), Alan Rudd (bs), Mike Humble (dms).
Last week, Ray Harley was blowing as though there was no tomorrow and it turns out there wasn't - he's now returned to the Iberian peninsula! 
It took a while to adjust to the ensembles without his rumbustious lead however, Herbie compensated well on trombone, harmonica and vocal.
Talking vocal, Olive put me well and truly in my place by opening up her songbook and extracting Blue and Brokenhearted, Blue Skies and Mean to Me. All sung in her inimitable style - nothing predictable this week! Later, Meet Me Tonight in Dreamland and a rousing Bourbon Street Parade to finish.
Throughout, Jim blew fine clarinet and Malcolm had some powerful solos. Alan underpinned the whole shebang aided and abetted by some imaginative percussiveness from Mike Humble on drums.
There is an atmosphere in Rosie's you don't get anywhere else - I half expect George Raft to come in wearing spats and flicking a silver dollar in the air.

R.I.P. John Bunch

Jazz pianist and former accompanist to Tony Bennett, John Bunch died March 30 age 88. 
Trumpet player, Jon-Erik Kelso, brought this to our attention on Facebook.
As well as playing with big bands such as Herman and Goodman, John Bunch recorded more recently with guitarist Bucky Pizzarrelli.
Greatly missed by all lovers of tasteful, harmonically creative piano playing.
