Bebop Spoken There

Joe Alterman: ''All I wanted to do growing up was to sound like Erroll Garner playing "Poor Butterfly." I thought that was the coolest sound I'd ever heard.'' (DownBeat November, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Classic Jazz Party 2026: Afternoon set @ the Village Hotel - Nov. 6

In its own way, the CJP is as important a jazz event as the festivals at Newport, London, Montreux or, you name it, anywhere in the world. The weekend's visitors, both on and off stage, travelled from near and far - The UK, the US, the EU, even the Antipodes - many of' the audience of "a certain age", the band lesser so.
For me one of the big attractions of the party is the attention given to, I won't say "unknown", rather "deserving of wider recognition".

The subjects this afternoon featured the presentation of the Young Talent Award which went to Californian trombonist Ryan Baker who, over the weekend, proved to be a worthy winner.

British pre-war trumpet legend Nat Gonella was celebrated with an exciting recreation of his Georgians led by Lewis Taylor. From what I remembered it sounded pretty authentic.

Maxine Sullivan doesn't get mentioned in the same breath as Billie and Ella but she should be. One person who does recognise her greatness is Nicolle Rochelle. Backed by Enrico Tomasso (trumpet); Ryan Baker (trombone); Lorenzo Baldazzo (alto sax); Natalie Scharf (clarinet); Felix Hunot (guitar); Mathew Meyer (piano); Harry Evans (bass); Josh Duffee (drums), Nicolle drew from Maxine's repertoire including her swing recordings of Cockles and Mussels and Loch Lomond. Magic!

The work of the impeccable American clarinetist Danny Polo, who spent several productive years in Europe with UK bands such as Ambrose and Spike Hughes, was authentically recreated by David Lukács. Excellent.

Yes, Suh! - Rico's Rhythmakers saw Enrico Tomasso playing trumpet as hot as anyone since Red Allen and, if that wasn't enough, sung like Billy Banks including a falsetto vocal on Mean Old Bed Bug Blues. Other numbers included: Oh! Peter; Spider Crawl; I Would do Anything For You and Yes, Suh.

The afternoon session concluded with an hour of Red Nichols with Sam Lanin.
A stellar line-up of Mike Davis, Colin Hancock (cornet); Graham Hughes (trombone); Michael McQuaid, Natalie Scharf, David Lukács (reeds); Martin Wheatley (banjo, guitar); Andy Schumm (piano); Phil Rutherford (tuba); Josh Duffee (drums), brought to my mind Scott F. Fitzgerald. I pictured flappers, cocktails and machine guns in violin cases. We did have dancers - perhaps their grandmothers were flappers - who kept the dream alive. All good fun not least with Michael McQuaid's virtuosic novelty sax solo.

Phew! What an afternoon. Time to go up the road and relax with some food. Relax? That's another story! Lance
