I must confess that 26 minutes of solo double bass playing can be a daunting prospect even when the perp. is the award-winning Glasgow based bassist David Bowden.
A musician and composer, Bowden is a former Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year, a crucial member of Fergus McCreadie's internationally acclaimed, Mercury Prize-nominated trio as well as being a much sought after bassist in the Scottish jazz and folk scene.
With such credentials I felt that to dismiss it after just a cursory few bars would be unfair to the player, the listener and the prospective buyer.
Unsung Songs turns out to be an excellent listen and totally unrelated to ditch water. The instrument's rich sonority provides the perfect setting for the lyricism of Bowden's melodic lines. These aren't bass solos inasmuch as songs without words with the instrument the voice and the bassist the singer.
Nine 'songs' - six by Bowden and one each by Nick Drake (tk 2), Emiliana Torrini (tk 6) and Chris Thile (tk 7).
