This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Finn-Keeble Quartet + Zoë Gilby & Andy Champion @ The Globe, Newcastle - Oct. 5

The concluding concert of a second long weekend concert programme at this year's Newcastle Festival of Jazz & Improvised Music (NFOJAiM) comprised a double bill featuring the Finn-Keeble Quartet and the voice and bass duo of Zoë Gilby and Andy Champion. 

Finn-Keeble Quartet: Harry Keeble (tenor sax); Dean Stockdale (piano); Andy Champion (double bass); Abbie Finn (drums) 

The Finn-Keeble Quartet (listed elsewhere as 'Finn-Keeble Group') presented a set of new, original material alongside a touch of Michael Brecker. The quartet's second ever gig was unexpectedly loud: Harry Keeble and Abbie Finn commandingly loud, similarly 'double duty' bassist Andy Champion, with the odd man out, pianist Dean Stockdale, further down in the mix. 

Much of the material is, as yet, untitled. The soloists - principally Keeble and Champion - impressed the festival audience, the quartet as a unit, likewise.   
  
Zoë Gilby & Andy Champion: The Music of Duke Ellington

Earlier, Zoë Gilby and Andy Champion explored the music of Edward Kennedy 'Duke' Ellington. From Don't Get Around Much Anymore to Take the 'A' Train our ace duo put their own spin on  Ellington's timeless work. 

I'm Beginning to See the Light and It Don't Mean a Thing featured ever-greater bass playing from the man,  Mr A. Champion. Do Nothin' till You Hear from Me sang the ever-inventive Ms. Z. Gilby, similarly Satin Doll was given an equally inventive interpretation. A fine one hour's worth of Duke Ellington. Russell
