Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Lewis Watson Quartet @ Central Bar, Gateshead - Feb. 2

Lewis Watson (tenor sax); Mark Williams (guitar); Andy Champion (double bass); John Bradford (drums)

In Independent Venue Week they came out of the woodwork for this one. Central Bar's upstairs concert room filled up nicely. Two o'clock on a Sunday afternoon, some people no doubt had better things to do - like what? - but here on Half Moon Lane the hardcore got themselves a beer, took a seat and awaited the arrival of the man. Yes, King Lewis was in town (Gateshead town).

Opening with Earth, Lewis Watson's magisterial tenor playing was a thing of wondrous beauty. Commanding, powerful, this was tenor saxophone playing at its very best. Watson's bandmates - Mark Williams, guitar, Andy Champion, bass, and drummer John Bradford - are A-listers and their abilities would be put to the test across two terrific sets.

More than 50% of the tunes played this afternoon were written by Watson and they stood comparison alongside compositions by Trane and Art Pepper. Watson's take on John Coltrane suggests he's spent a lifetime studying the musical legacy of the great man. The Promise enveloped the room, moments of great intensity, Lewis Watson in full flight. Wow! Pepper's Blues for Les led to Watson making the case for the blues, saying we should hear more of the form, hence coining the title, The Necessary Blues. Amen to that. And to close the second of two marvellous sets, Watson's Prayer to Be could be said to speak of our times.

The Lewis Watson Quartet can be heard again this week, not once, but twice. On Thursday afternoon (1:15-2:00pm), the LW4 will be at King's Hall, Newcastle University (free admission) and on Saturday evening (7:30pm) at Blyth's Yamaha Music School (book online at: www.yamahanorthumberland.com). Russell
