This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Laurie Holloway MBE (March 31, 1938-Jan. 9, 2025)

The passing of Laurie Holloway, not surprisingly, for me was tinged with sadness. Not because he was born 22 days after me in 1938, but that a concert by the Laurie Holloway Trio at Leeds College of Music back in 2009 was lovingly reviewed on BSH by my dear friend Liz Harris that perfectly captured the essence of the man both musically and personally - read it HERE.

Although most people will remember him via his contributions to the success of many pop stars such as Petula Clark, Tom Jones, Engelbert Humperdinck and others, I recall him from a Jazz 625 TV broadcast alongside Clark Terry, Bob Brookmeyer, Rick Laird and Allan Ganley - HERE.

One of the relatively unsung greats of British jazz.
