Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Sunday night @ the Globe: the Greg Abate Quartet - Nov. 24

© Ken Drew
Greg Abate (alto sax); Dean Stockdale (piano); Andy Champion (bass); Abbie Finn (drums)

Bebop spoken here? It certainly was last night at the Globe as the notes and phrases flowed, often at breakneck speed, from the bell of Greg Abate's Selmer alto. From the opening On Green Dolphin Street to the final bars of Softly as in a Morning Sunrise I sat mesmorised by his technique and what he was doing with it.

I've heard Greg Abate several times over the years and have yet to be disappointed.

Each concert is like hearing him for the first time. That sound of surprise is never far away. I've probably heard him play Body and Soul somewhere along the line but his version last night was, I think, the best version of that tune that I've ever heard played live by any person, at any place, anywhere.

I'm not going to attempt a blow by blow review - we've already posted three reviews from his extensive tour of England's green and pleasant(ish) land. Russell waxed eloquently on yesterday afternoon's session in Hexham whilst our correspondent from way out west, Mike Farmer, reported on the happenings in Belper and Cheltenham - we are everywhere, especially when it's a gig that validates  the name of this blog!

The rhythm section of Stockdale, Champion and Finn delivered the goods as we knew they would stretching out at length ...

Only one tiny criticism, too many fours! However, fours, like Summertime (not played) are one of my allegies so maybe I'm in the minority.

He'll be back next year and I'm already counting the days! Lance

On Green Dolphin Street; Ceora; Yardbird Suite; Recorda Me; Body and Soul; Segment; Confirmation (?); On the Road; I Can't Get Started; Crazeology; The Theme; Softly as in a Morning Sunrise; Triste
