Shellac (M2): Jimmy McPartland & his Orchestra - Daughter of Sister Kate/In a Mist (Harmony)

With apologies to Fats Navarro and Jimmy Noone, I have to slip in another 'M' as I haven't any 78s by artists whose surname begins with the letter N!

Nevertheless this is an interesting one not least because the 'orchestra' - all six of them - is led by legendary Chicago cornet player Jimmy McPartland and his wife, British born, Marian McPartland who became an even greater legend. On this recording Marian is listed as Marian Page, the stage name she'd adopted in her early days playing theatres in Britain with fellow pianist Billy Mayerl.

Over the years I was fortunate to hear them both live: Jimmy at the Corner House, Newcastle and Marian at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland.

Jimmy sings on his own composition Daughter of Sister Kate and Marian is featured on Bix's In a Mist. Paradoxically, I heard this 1949 version before I heard Bix's 1927 recording. Trombonist Harry Lepp, who I'd never heard of before and nor have I done since, has a nice solo but it's Marian who walks away with the cigar.

Jimmy McPartland (cornet, vocal). Jack O'Connel (clarinet); Harry Lepp (trombone); Marian 'Page' (piano); Ben Carlton (bass); Mousie Alexander (drums).

These sides were two of four issued on the McPartland's short lived Unison label and appeared in the UK on the equally elusive Harmony label.
