Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Indigo Jazz Voices w. the Little Big Band @ the Globe - Oct. 10

© Patti (singer Jen Errington)
David Edgar, Jen Errington, Jenny Lingham, Carrie McCullock (individual vocals), Paul Close (vocal, guitar); Alan Law (piano); Paul Grainger (bass); Rob Walker (drums); Harry Keeble (tenor saxophone); Pete Tanton (trumpet).

Indigo Jazz Voices began life as Blue Jazz Voices, at what was then Sage Gateshead, under the tutelage of Lindsay Hannon. With the move to the Globe and a change of colour they began what was to become an ongoing ten year, bi-monthly, residency.

Last night the five singers strutted their stuff before an enthusiastic crowd with a varied choice of songs.

Each singer had their own individual and distinctive voice making it impossible, and unfair, to single out one above the rest - they weren't contestants and one person's weakness is another person's strength and, of course, vice versa.

It was a show of two sets comprising of two songs per singer per set.

After an opening number by the band, augmented for the occasion by Pete Tanton and Harry Keeble on trumpet and tenor respectively - the appropriately named I Hear a Rhapsody -  we heard, over the two sets, the following:

David Edgar: Fly me to the Moon; Time After Time; Beyond the Sea; Moon Dance (w. Paul Close guitar).

Jenny Lingham: Love me or Leave me; Brand New Day (w. Paul Close guitar); Please Don't Let me be Misunderstood; Willow Weep For me.

Jen Errington: Day in, Day Out; I Can't Get Started; On a Clear Day; We'll be Together Again.

Carrie McCullock: L.O.V.E; Sway; You do Something to me; Sing, Sing, Sing.

Paul Close: Autumn Leaves; Rambling on my Mind; I Hear You Knockin'; Evenin'.

It was an enjoyable session with a great atmosphere. Ann Alex (R.I.P.) would have loved it. Lance

Ann was a member of IJV for a number of years, and you're right Lance, she would loved last night.
