Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Mike Hope Quartet @ the Moor Club, Stockport - Sept. 29

© Jeff Pritchard
Mike Hope (tenor sax); Andrzej Baranek (keys); Ed Harrison (bass); Eryl Roberts (drums).

More travel problems with cancelled trains due to staff shortage, delays due to trespassers on the line and again I had to get off the train at Stockport and get the 192 bus otherwise I would have ended up at Piccadilly Manchester. I did however make it to the Moor Club in time to be one of the first customers to arrive as organiser Paul Hartley was setting up the pa equipment and creating a great pre-gig atmosphere by playing the Art Pepper Plus Eleven album.  If you don’t know this record, try and find it as it’s one of Art’s best with arrangements by the legendary Marty Paich.

When Mike Hope arrived he wasted no time in going into twelve bar blues' territory with Turnaround by Ornette Coleman followed by a jaunty rendition of the Fats Waller standard Honeysuckle Rose. During this number Mike got into some stop choruses with Andrzej Baranek and later in the theme did the same with Ed Harrison.

Mike mentioned that he was a big fan of Stan Getz and before the interval he played three tunes although not composed by Stan were closely connected with him.

Another five numbers were featured in the second half and in spite of the weather, perhaps putting some people off, there was a reasonable turnout and all the signs are that this could prove to be a suitable addition to the Stockport jazz scene.

For details of forthcoming events contact The Moor Club, 35 Heaton Moor Rd., Stockport,SK44PB. Tel. 0161 4322142. Mike Farmer

Turnaround; Honeysuckle Rose; Moonlight in Vermont; One Note Samba; I'll Remember April; Desifinado; Four; But Beautiful; On Green Dolphin Street; Anthropology.
