Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Dulcie May Moreno @ The Yamaha Music School, Blyth - Feb. 19

Dulcie May Moreno (vocals); Mark Williams (guitar); Mick Shoulder (double bass); John Bradford (drums)

The Yamaha Music School on Seaforth Street in Blyth is a welcome new addition to the region's thriving music scene. Nine Monday lunchtime concerts (predominately classical) were announced earlier this year, this afternoon's concert presented jazz singer Dulcie May Moreno. A fourth concert in five days - Durham, Newcastle, Hexham and today, Blyth - concluded Moreno's 'up north' tour. A jazz gig in south east Northumberland is a rarity, the Blyth venue an unknown quantity, the good news is an audience turned out!

Here on Seaforth Street, Dulcie's 'Northern Jazz Cats' (Mark Williams, Mick Shoulder and John Bradford) were ready for whichever number our vocalist/composer pulled from the pad/iPad. The tour's set opener - You and the Night and the Music - introduced Dulcie to an expectant Blyth audience. And, no surprise, those present liked what they were hearing. Take Me to New York, a Dulcie May Moreno original, is a good one, painting vivid pictures of a largely bygone Big Apple jazz landscape.

Joe Zawinul's Mercy, Mercy Mercy holds appeal, jazz fan or not, it's the groove that does it. A more recent Dulcie song - Forsaken - received its north of England premier, Peel Me a Grape we'd heard before, and Get Out of Town was Ms Moreno's polite way of telling us it was time to get out of town and head for home.

The next jazz concert at the Yamaha Music School features the Matthew Forster Quartet on Monday 11 March. One o'clock start, admission £8.00. in advance or on the door. Russell
