This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Pete Tanton's Cuba Libre @ Prohibition Bar, Newcastle - May 25

A sharp exit from the Strictly Smokin' Big Band's barnstorming gig at the Bridge Hotel then hotfooting it to Prohibition Bar to catch the second set by Pete Tanton's new band, Cuba Libre. Trumpeter Pete would have been on the SSBB's gig but the man couldn't be in two places at once so Pink Lane won out. Arriving in good time for the start of the second set, Bruce B, friend of BSH, made us welcome at his front row table. 
Cuba Libre is, as the name would suggest, a Latin jazz outfit. Pete's trumpet playing and vocals, alongside the all-action Latin percussion master Carlos Rivera handling the Cuban/Portuguese/Spanish vocal numbers, made for an enjoyable hour or so. Pete's vocals on But Not for Me and When Sunny Gets Blue, Carlos' vocals on the non-jazz standards, pianist Alan Law the obvious choice for this new project (our  man has been to Cuba, you know!) alongside versatile bassist Paul Grainger, Cuba Libre is up and running.
