This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Dave Lynane Quartet @ the Railway, Stockport - May 14

I always look forward to hearing local bass player Dave Lynane here at the Railway and for last night’s gig he brought along his former team mate from Maynard Ferguson’s Band Al Wood who, although he placed a soprano sax on his sax stand, featured only his alto sax throughout the evening. 


Al has played this venue before but making his first appearance here was his friend, drummer Tim Brickel, and to complete the line-up was a musician who never fails to excite, keyboard maestro Paul Kilvington. Brickel I would like to see more of - he was very very good!

I was a little surprised to notice one or two empty seats in the music room which was unusual for a Sunday night, maybe some had decided to watch Eurovision, who knows, but the regular jazz fans were there and they were not disappointed.


The selection of tunes covered a wide range which included compositions by Jerome Kern, Nat Adderley, Benny Carter, Slide Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Bronislaw Kaper, Buddy Johnson, and Lester Young.


If you like the alto styles of Cannonball Adderley and Phil Woods you are sure to like Al Wood and I congratulate Al and Dave for keeping the bebop flame burning.


There is no jazz at the Railway on Tuesday May 16, the next jazz night being Sunday May 21 with the Derrick Harris Quartet. Mike Farmer
