Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Paul Hartley Quartet @ the Railway, Stockport - Feb. 28

(© J. Pritchard)
Paul Hartley (guitar); Jim Collins (tenor sax); Ken Marley (bass); Eryl Roberts (drums).

Paul’s guest tonight was reeds maestro Jim Collins who appeared here recently as part of Freddie Garner’s Quartet. On that occasion he played a Yamaha tenor and an alto sax but for this gig he just brought along a tenor sax which he told me was a Conn 10M manufactured in 1945. I love those vintage horns and Jim has that sound and fluency that makes me think of those Blue Note tenormen like Tina Brooks and Joe Henderson.  This was a unit that was comprised of musicians  from the Stockport area and they worked well together.

Seven tunes were heard in the first set and five in the second set and I found it impossible to pick out any high spots as every number sounded good to me. Eryl Roberts  played brilliantly, Paul can always be relied upon to play some great solos and he worked well alongside Ken Marley’s forceful bass.

We heard something to suit all tastes, a Bossa, some hard bop, a Strayhorn ballad, some great standards and I even enjoyed their version of a tune that for some reason usually gets played on a Sunday night Stella by Starlight. As you can see from the set list a lot of great material was selected by Jim and Paul and I  would like to thank them for a most enjoyable evening of great music.

The next jazz gig at the Railway is March 5 with the Gavin Barras Quartet.

That Old Feeling; Stella by Starlight; Chega de Saudade; Autumn in New York; You Stepped Out of a Dream; Four; There is no Greater Love; This I Dig of You; Stompin’ at the Savoy; Beatrice; Chelsea Bridge; Speak Low.
