This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Album review: The Cookers - Look Out!

A septet of vast experience (between them they've contributed to more than 1000 studio recordings), it would be difficult to think of a better post bop outfit. The Cookers' latest album, the sixth in twelve years, features the established line-up: veterans Billy Harper (tenor sax), Eddie Henderson (trumpet), George Cables (piano), Cecil McBee (bass) and drummer Billy Hart, alongside the younger generation of David Weiss (trumpet) and Donald Harrison (alto sax).

The album's seven tracks are composed variously by Harper, McBee and Hart. It's worth noting four members of the band had stints with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and it shows in their committed approach to the music. Four horn players in the line-up produces a full, rich ensemble sound, and their solo excursions are straight out of the school of hard bop textbook. Look Out! is available from Gearbox Records (cat. no.
