This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Trefor Owen Quartet @ The Railway, Stockport - Oct. 3

Trefor Owen (guitar);  Liam Byrne (tenor sax); Andy Hulme (guitar); Ed Harrison (bass).

Anyone interested in guitar music will have heard of Trefor Owen, a tireless and enthusiastic presence on the jazz scene and also well-known as an educator in the UK and abroad.His current group includes in their repertoire standards from the GASB, originals by Wes Montgomery, and the occasional tune written by Trefor such as Ellen. 


Tonight the emphasis was on show tunes and we heard no less than three tunes from the pen of Henry Mancini, Dreamsville, The Shadow of Your Smile. and Days of Wine and Roses. I enjoyed all twelve tunes played and so did the audience judging by their reaction.  


Liam Byrne is the ideal front-line man for this type of band and his solos I found interesting helped by the rock-solid bass playing of Ed Harrison. Andy Hulme also helped to make this one of the best drummer-less outfits around.                    


The next gig at the Railway is on Tuesday, October 5 - guitarist Steve Oakes with guest pianist Andrzej Barenek - Mike Farmer
