This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Paul Hartley Quartet featuring Rod Mason at the Railway Stockport - Oct. 12

Paul Hartley (guitar); Rod Mason (tenor/baritone sax); Ken Marley (bass); Dave Walsh (drums).

As Paul Hartley explained in his introduction, it has been over two years since Yorkshire-based Rod Mason has appeared at the Railway and for this visit he brought with him both tenor and baritone saxes. 

Although he played from a sitting position at the side of the stage, his high-energy approach made a big impact on the audience. I liked his choice of tunes - 12 in all - and I particularly liked the way he did that much played standard There Will Never Be Another You in 6/8 time. Another highspot was his treatment of Hank Mobley’s This I Dig Of You from Hank’s iconic album Soul Station.   Drummer Dave Walsh shone on this number and together with Ken Marley on bass they made a first-rate rhythm team.
