This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Michael Connelly - The Concrete Blonde (book)

The Concrete Blonde is the third in Michael Connelly's series involving Los Angeles cop Harry Bosch. This one came out in 1994 and is, in the main a courtroom drama where Bosch is accused of shooting an unnamed man suspected of being The Dollmaker - a serial killer who tarts up the corpses of his female victims with lipstick, mascara etc.

It's a compelling read with all sorts of twists and turns before truth will out.

The jazz references aren't as frequent as they sometimes are in the series although Bosch does spend an evening downing double Jack Ds with beer chasers in a bar whilst listening to a quartet playing a Strayhorn set that included Lush Life and Blood Count. He then drives over to his girl friend Sylvia's place and, fortunately, doesn't have a drunk driving rap to add to his troubles.

If you like your crime fiction to have a little jazz in it then Connelly's your man. - Lance
